The history of OMS
The renowned international company we now know as OMS had very humble beginnings. It has carved its way thr ough the political and economic struggles of an opening Eur ope to become a key player on the global lighting market.
OMS spol. s r.o. becomes a registered company and makes its entrance onto the lighting stage. The company gets its first corporate identity.
OMS’ very first luminaire families RELAX and CLASSIC are released. Thanks to regular technological updates of these core products, they remain popular even now.
After four years of manufacturing externally designed spotlight, downlight, industrial, office and pole-mounted, decorative urban and floodlight outdoor luminaires, OMS makes the next step in their evolution and begins the design of their own product portfolio.
The first product is a DOWNLIGHT withseveral reflector options.
The first OMS product catalogue is released, including approximately 20 products.
Industrial luminaire TORNADO is released
and remains a central product in the portfolio
to this day.
Continuing their corporate growth and gaining the respect of more and more clients across the globe, OMS reaches the 25 million Euro turnover milestone. This is an ideal time for a corporate makeover including a more modern logo and the creation of the first website, www.oms.sk.
Slovakia enters the EU, and OMS starts a new stage of development including the purchase of new headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Dojč, which are still in operation today as the backbone
of the company.
Iconic OMS product PRESTIGE is released. Thanks to several technological updates, it remains a pillar of
the product portfolio and a customer favourite.
Another key player in the earlier days of the company is the EXE family, a surfaced or suspended linear luminaire that is still a hit with customers, especially in its LED form.
The FORSTREET street luminaire family is released, including several products suitable for various types of conventional light source.
The new manufacturing premises are fully equipped with the latest high-tech and automated production technologies, allowing OMS to produce more luminaires, better and faster. This step necessitates implementation of a superior logistics infrastructure, which still one of the key advantages of the company to this day.
Now a key player on the international lighting scene with customers across many countries, OMS decides to improve their visibility on the market and makes a first appearance at the biennial Light + Building event in Frankfurt, Germany. Here, OMS displays their technological capability.
Now in their new manufacturing premises, OMS sees fit to add the striking main administrative building, designed by the CEO himself. His desire is that it look like the prow of a powerful ship pushing its way through heavy seas as a metaphor for the history of the company. Years later, it still makes an impressive first impression.
After two more years of rapid growth, the company once again visits Light + Building, this time displaying a higher level of product refinement and innovation.
The UNILUX brand is developed. Intended as a separate marque, it includes price-focused products and enables the OMS brand to focus on luminaires that emphasise high quality and innovation.
A modern showroom is built in the basement of the main administrative building to showcase the latest products in an interactive environment.
In-house product development continues to advance and Slovakia joins the Eurozone, giving added impetus to corporate development and leading to a commitment to invest 7 million Euros in the construction and equipment of OMS’ own R&D building.
Known as the Lighting Innovation Centre (LIC), the state-of-the-art R&D building becomes the place where all new luminaires, lighting control technologies and lighting services began to take shape.
The LIC enables OMS to move onto the next stage of their journey.
Culminating this advancement, OMS releases their first LED portfolio with 13 market-leading general illumination luminaires. Some of these products, after due updating, are so well received that they are still core to the current portfolio.
For the third time, OMS exhibits at Light + Building. This time they present the face of a truly modern company with a strong technical, engineering and academic force supporting it, and which has developed unique technologies, products and services.
The technologically advanced product EYE is released. It includes digital control of mechanically moveable parts to provide a wide avriety of light distributions within one single unit. It is such a favourite in the company that the head of R&D has one installed in his office.
Continued manufacturing success combined with their new R&D capabilities moves the company into a new
era. No longer focused solely on product manufacture, the company begins to implement the latest science into highly advanced products, services and tools. The new era comes with a new corporate guise, still in use today.
The ELITE brand is developed, which presents scientifically advanced products that have added creative, technological and innovative value. Now there are three brands, with ELITE for top-end markets, OMS for
mid-range markets and UNOLUX for price-conscious markets.
The Lighting Quality Standard (LQS) is developed. It aims to simplify and clarify what makes a lighting solution successful and enable their easy assessment and qualification. The theory is based on the 6 E’s: ergonomics, emotion, ecology, efficiency, esprit and exceptionality. LQS is central to the OMS philosophy.
OMS’ fourth participation in Light + Building highlights the company’s development in lighting solutions and LMS design. And based on the LQS, the company releases associated tool LQS Composer, as well as the LED Academy.
The Right Light methodology comes to life and condensed into a series of books. It combines adherence to standards and the LQS system, findings of research and the latest trends and technologies, and shows exactly how to use them.
The award-winning and inspirational product REBELL is released.
The highly flexible, adaptable and effective AVIOR LED spotlight family is released, and takes a central position in the ELITE product range.
The European Lighting Tour (ELT) begins, taking the LQS and Right Light methodologies to many countries using the mobile and interactive ELT truck exhibition space. To highlight the importance of this step, the OMS logo receives the new slogan, ‘Follow the right light’.
The OMS brand structure is updated, changing from the three differentiated brands ELITE, OMS and UNOLUX, to three hierarchical brands under the OMS name: ELITE, ADVANCED and UNOLUX.
The circular LED downlight PRETTUS is released, which boasts so many optical and lumen package variations across three sizes, in addition to market leading efficacies, that it takes centre stage in the product portfolio.
If square is more your thing, the simultaneously released NOVIEL LED downlight offers various highly effective optical and lumen packages across three sizes. It stands as a key player in the portfolio next to its circular sister.
Simplifying the product range into highly flexible key products, the FREYN family is everything you could need from an LED general lighting luminaire. Already in its second generation, it offers fantastic parameters.
A fifth attendance at Light + Building brings to the fore how OMS follows global trends and applies them to lead the way in lighting trends. With an intriguing 360º design, the stand highlights the capabilities of the
DUELIS, designed by in-house product designer Anton Zetocha, wins the Design Plus award at Light + Building. It is the first high-profile international award for OMS.
MEGIN is released, and marks the peak of OMS’ streetlighting products so far. Powerful, efficient, controllable and with 12 light distribution options, it has already proved a favourite with customers worldwide.
OMS becomes the first in the world to mass-produce a luminaire with a nanostructure diffuser. PRESTIGE LED N DOUBLE ASYMMETRIC uses nano optics to provide more precise light distribution, better lighting performance and higher efficacies.
Touching 20 years since registration of the OMS brand, the company restructures its extensive services into three subsidiaries, with effect from midyear. Marking the latest step in the company’s evolution, OMS Lighting now comprises OMS the manufacturer, SLE the lighting services and solutions provider, and iLumTech R&D.
